Population: Morocco: 500 - 600 birds (2009) Syria: 4 (2009), Turkey: 100 (2009) Captive population: 1000 birds in Europe, 120 in North America, 120 in Japan Threats: The NBI is an endangered bird species (IUCN Critically endangered; CITES I). Loss and/or degradation/overgrazing of feeding habitats (Turkey, Syria), disturbance at the breeding sites (Morocco) and hunting (Syria, wintering grounds) are the biggest threats for the species.
